Straight and Folding Barrier Arms: Questions for Low-Clearance Sites

A covered car park entrance may look spacious until a barrier arm begins to move. Ceiling beams, pipes, signs and sloping road surfaces can restrict the space available above the lane. Buyers who share only the width of the opening may receive a proposal that does not reflect those constraints.

This guide sets out the information to gather when discussing straight and folding arms with a supplier. It describes general planning considerations. The correct arrangement depends on the selected barrier, its drawings, the actual site and the assessment carried out by the responsible installer.

Why the movement path matters

A straight boom occupies different positions as it opens and closes. The space it needs cannot be judged from the closed position alone. A folding or articulated arrangement changes the geometry of movement, but it is not a universal solution: the cabinet, hinge configuration, arm length and mounting position still need to be compatible.

Request a drawing for the exact gate and arm configuration. Check the full movement envelope against the site rather than assuming that a product photograph represents the dimensions available in every model. The drawing should identify reference points and units so that the site team and supplier can compare like with like.

Measure the opening and the cabinet position

Start with the clear vehicle opening at the intended gate line. Show walls, kerbs, columns and any protective posts. Mark the intended cabinet side and state the viewing direction; left and right can be interpreted differently when people stand on opposite sides of an entrance.

The clear opening and the boom length are not necessarily the same measurement. Cabinet dimensions, the mounting arrangement and the arm design influence the final configuration. Send a plan view with labelled dimensions and ask the supplier to show how the proposed equipment fits before an order is placed.

Also allow for the equipment base, cable entry and access for inspection. The responsible contractor should review the ground condition and underground services before preparing a foundation. Any vehicle-impact protection should be coordinated with the space needed to maintain the cabinet.

Build a useful overhead clearance map

Measure from the road or another agreed datum to the ceiling at several positions along the proposed arm path. Record beams, ventilation ducts, electrical trays, lighting, signs, sprinkler pipes and other obstructions separately. A single height measurement at the cabinet may miss the lowest object farther across the lane.

Show the distance of each obstacle from the cabinet as well as its height. A side-view sketch and photographs from both directions help explain the geometry. If the ceiling changes height or the road slopes, document that change. Where the layout is complicated, the installer may need more detailed site measurements before approving the design.

Compare configurations using the same site information

Ask each supplier which arm types are offered for the selected cabinet and what lengths are available for the particular configuration. Request dimensions, installation instructions and any required mounting accessories. Confirm whether proposed parts are included in the quotation rather than assuming they come with the basic gate.

Consider the complete installation, not the arm alone. A configuration may reduce the space required above one part of the lane but introduce different mounting, service or adjustment requirements. The supplier should explain any assumptions or site information still needed to confirm its recommendation.

Review traffic and pedestrian movements

Describe the vehicles that will use the entrance, the direction of travel and expected stopping positions. Include unusual but foreseeable movements such as delivery vehicles turning into the lane or a queue extending back toward a junction. If the entrance is shared by pedestrians, mark their route and any crossing points.

UK Health and Safety Executive workplace transport guidance recommends separating pedestrian and vehicle routes where possible and managing crossings. The guidance is a useful discussion point; local obligations and the final risk assessment depend on the jurisdiction and the actual site. Vehicle detection should not be assumed to address every pedestrian or equipment hazard.

Plan installation, controls and commissioning

Provide the available power source, cable route and any existing controller or access system that the barrier must connect to. Identify the make, model and interface documentation where available. Compatibility must be confirmed for the specific devices and versions; similar product names or connectors are not enough.

Before handover, agree who will verify the installation and test representative movements according to the manufacturer's instructions and applicable project requirements. The checks should cover the complete operating sequence, connected equipment and the clearance of the arm throughout its movement. Record settings, outstanding issues and the people responsible for resolving them.

Questions to include in your enquiry

Send the lane width, cabinet position, road slope, overhead measurements, obstacle locations and site photos. Describe the normal vehicle types, traffic flow, intended controls and service access. Ask for a model-specific drawing showing the proposed arm and its operating space, along with the included accessories and installation requirements.

If a measurement has not been checked, label it as provisional. A supplier can then identify the missing information instead of relying on an assumed clearance. Before installation, have the project team confirm the final dimensions against the actual site and approved equipment.
