How to Choose a Boom Barrier Gate: Factory Buyer's Guide 2026

Published: October 2026  |  Category: Buying Guide

Choosing the right boom barrier gate is not about finding the cheapest unit. It is about matching the motor duty cycle to your traffic volume, the arm length to your lane width, and the communication protocol to your access control system. This guide is written from a manufacturer's perspective — we build these gates in Shenzhen, China, and we know what fails in the field.

Step 1: Determine Your Lane Width

This is the first question we ask every customer. Measure the full opening width — not just the paved surface. The cabinet itself takes about 35cm.

Lane Width Recommended Boom Length Gate Type
Under 3m 2.5m mini gate Mini barrier
3 - 4.5m 4m straight boom Standard commercial
4.5 - 6m 6m straight boom Premium / high-torque
Over 6m Heavy-duty or dual gate Industrial heavy duty

Important: If your lane is exactly 6m, do not buy a 6m boom — you will not have enough clearance. Choose the next size up or use two gates.

Step 2: Match Motor to Daily Traffic

This is where most buyers go wrong. A motor that is too small for your traffic volume will overheat and die within a year. Duty cycle (占空比) tells you how long the motor can run continuously without overheating.

Daily Cycles Typical Site Motor Required
Under 300 Residential community Light duty, 60-100W
300 - 1,000 Office building, shopping mall Medium duty, 140-200W
Over 1,000 Hospital, logistics park, toll High duty continuous, 200W+ brushless

Step 3: Choose the Right Boom Type

Boom Type Best For Max Length
Straight arm Standard outdoor parking 6m
Folding arm Low-height underground garages 5m
Fence arm Residential, anti-climb security 5m
Advertising light box arm Monetized entrances, branding 4 - 4.5m

Step 4: Voltage — Always Choose DC24V

We get asked this almost every day. Here is the short answer:

  • DC24V brushless motor: Safe low voltage, quiet operation, 8 million cycle lifespan, maintenance-free. Industry standard for modern parking systems.
  • AC220V motor: Cheaper upfront, louder, shorter lifespan, electric shock risk in wet outdoor conditions.

Unless you have a very tight budget and the site is indoor industrial, always choose DC24V. The small price difference pays for itself in 2 years of avoided maintenance.

Step 5: Confirm Communication Protocol

A barrier gate is never a standalone device. It connects to your LPR camera, RFID reader or access control system. Before ordering, confirm which protocol your system uses:

Protocol What It Does
Relay output Basic on/off signal. Universal compatibility.
RS485 / Modbus Two-way communication. Required for integrated parking systems with LPR cameras.
TCP/IP Cloud-connected, remote monitoring and management.

Step 6: Outdoor Conditions

If your gate is installed outdoors, do not skip these checks:

  • IP rating: IP54 minimum for outdoor. All JIEWEISHI outdoor barriers are tested to IP54.
  • Temperature range: Standard is -20°C to +60°C. If you are in Northern Europe, Canada, Mongolia or Northeast China, specify the low-temperature option (heater + low-temp grease).
  • Coastal areas: Ask for salt-spray test certificate. Untreated steel rusts within 2 years near the ocean.
  • Wind load: Typhoon-prone regions need anti-wind bracket option and wind load resistance rating.

5 Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Buying the cheapest unit. A cheap barrier that fails in 12 months costs more than a quality barrier that runs for 8 years. Factor in service calls and downtime.
  2. Ignoring duty cycle. If your gate opens and closes 800 times a day, a light-duty residential motor will burn out in months.
  3. Wrong boom type for low ceilings. Folding arms are not optional — they are required for underground garages under 2.5m clearance.
  4. No RS485 for LPR integration. If you plan to add license plate recognition later, you need RS485 today.
  5. Skipping foundation specs. Every barrier needs a concrete foundation pad. Do not let your installer improvise — ask for the foundation drawing before installation.
